The Town
As for a general history of the area, this is our best approximation of
the truth as we have pieced it together from oral and written sources.
Please email us if you have better or more accurate information than this.
This area of the island (about 6000 acres worth) was owned by the Arthur
Lyman family who did the original development in the Kapoho area. As developers,
they chose the best ocean front properties for themselves and built our
home in 1952. The Lagoon House is considered to have the best swimming pond
among a couple of dozen ponds in Kapoho Beach.
The Volcano
In 1959 a volcano erupted near the village of Kapoho and covered it on
its way to the sea, where the lava added about 500 acres of new land.
It came within a couple hundred feet of the house and stopped (see picture taken from January 1960 National Geographic magazine). About 10 years
earlier, a nearby volcano erupted and Mr. Lyman had the distinction of
being the only private citizen to own two active volcanoes.
The area to the north of the house was used to train astronauts for the
moon landing and is now being mined for volcanic cinders. The cinder cones
are all but gone. The house was transferred to relatives and/or friends
until we purchased it in 1996.
